Snowstorm Triggers Emergencies in Northeastern United States

A powerful winter storm hit the northeastern United States, prompting states of emergency in New York and New Jersey and forcing widespread school closures. Heavy snow, strong winds and icy conditions disrupted transportation and led to traffic restrictions.

Thousands of flights were canceled at major airports including JFK, LaGuardia and Newark. Massachusetts also declared a state of emergency, while authorities across the region urged residents to stay home as cleanup efforts continue.
