South Korea’s National Assembly unanimously approved an impeachment motion against Interim President Han Duck-soo with 191 votes, marking a first in the nation’s history. The decision follows the suspension of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s powers during a martial law crisis.
Han stated he respects the decision and awaits the Constitutional Court’s final ruling. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok will act as interim president during this period.
Tensions arose before the vote as ruling People’s Power Party lawmakers challenged the voting procedure, arguing a two-thirds majority was required instead of a simple majority.
