The main opposition Democratic Party and five other parties in South Korea have submitted a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yoon, who declared martial law on the grounds that “the opposition is carrying out activities against the state.” According to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, the impeachment motion is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly Plenary Session tomorrow, with a vote expected on December 6 or 7.
At least two-thirds of the 300-seat National Assembly are required to impeach Yoon. The motion must be supported by at least 8 members of Yoon’s People’s Power Party in order to pass in the National Assembly, where the Democratic Party, minor opposition parties and independents hold a total of 192 seats.
Stating that there is no crisis in the country that would require a martial law decision, the opposition argues that Yoon declared martial law due to corruption allegations against him.
