Spain battles 20 major wildfires

Spain is facing its worst wildfire season in two decades, with 20 large blazes raging across the country. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez cut short his vacation, warning of “difficult days ahead” as nearly 1,900 soldiers and EU support teams fight the fires.

Over 115,000 hectares have already burned, three people died last week, and highways and railways were closed. Sanchez linked the worsening disaster to the climate crisis, while neighboring Portugal is also battling major fires.
