Spain to Rescue Hantavirus-Stricken Ship

Spain will allow the Dutch-flagged passenger vessel MV Hondius, stranded off Cape Verde following a deadly hantavirus outbreak, to dock in the Canary Islands. The ship, carrying 147 passengers and crew—including prominent Turkish YouTuber Ruhi Çenet—has been under strict quarantine since early May. Citing moral and legal obligations, Spanish health authorities intervened after the World Health Organization confirmed Cape Verde lacked the medical capacity to handle the crisis. An emergency medical flight will first evacuate the critically ill ship’s doctor before the vessel completes its three-day journey to Gran Canaria or Tenerife.
