Spanish Transport Minister Resigns After Deadly Train Crashes

Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente has resigned following two deadly train accidents on January 18 and October 28 that claimed at least 119 lives combined. “In a country like Spain, a transport minister cannot continue in his post after two such grave accidents in less than a year,” Puente said. He explained that he had decided to step down within minutes of learning about the October 28 crash but remained in office to oversee emergency response efforts, preliminary investigations and initial measures to support victims and improve railway safety. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez praised Puente for prioritizing the victims and taking political responsibility.
