Sri Lankans protest against president amid economic crisis

In Sri Lanka, power outages which is up to 13 hours a day brought people to the streets. Protesters called for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation, claiming that he had failed to address the current economic crisis. The lack of foreign exchange has caused severe shortages in food, fuel, medicine, and imported goods on the island nation.

Some protesters broke through the police barricade and attacked Rajapaksa’s residence. While the police used tear gas and water cannon to intervene in the situation, the demonstrators retaliated by throwing stones at the officers. Due to the events, a curfew was imposed in the capital. 54 people were detained, and 5 police officers were injured during the protests, authorities said.
