state of emergency declares in Peru amid protests

Peruvian Defense Minister Alberto Otarola declared a state of emergency for 30 days across the country in response to the violent protests that erupted following the dismissal of former President Pedro Castillo. The Peruvian Attorney General’s Office requested that Castillo, who is currently detained and accused of “rioting,” be held in preventive detention for 18 months.

Dina Boluarte, the country’s first female president, stated that following her meeting with the Council of State, some arrangements were made and early elections could be held in December 2023 instead of the official election day of April 2024.
