Syrians Return to Ruins in Damascus’ Jobar Cemetery

Residents of Jobar, a neighborhood in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus, have returned to the area after years of war and oppression under Syria’s Baath regime. The neighborhood, heavily bombed by both Hafez and Bashar Assad, including chemical attacks, lies in ruins.

For the first time in seven years, Syrians entered Jobar’s cemetery, praying at gravesites amid the rubble. Muhammed Hatim, visiting his parents’ graves, said, “We hadn’t been here for seven years. The war has destroyed everything—our homes, our lives.”

Safa Hammo, another visitor, described the widespread destruction: “Assad’s forces bombed this place, displacing us and ruining our homes. I don’t approve of war, but it seems endless.”

The devastation in Jobar serves as a stark reminder of the prolonged conflict in Syria.
