Ten Killed in Kenya’s ‘Saba Saba’ Protests

Clashes between police and protesters during Kenya’s “Saba Saba Day” demonstrations have left 10 people dead and 29 injured, according to the Kenya National Human Rights Commission. Authorities arrested 37 people and reported two kidnappings amid unrest in 17 counties.

Police used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse crowds in Nairobi, where major roads were blocked and businesses shut down. The government condemned the violence, warning it will not tolerate unrest.

“Saba Saba” marks the historic July 7, 1990, protests for multi-party democracy in Kenya.
