Tension rose between the demonstrators protesting the strict corona virus measures and the police in Guangzhou, a city in southern China. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd who threw stones and pieces of the barriers put up for quarantine at them.
Emphasizing that illegal acts and crimes that disturb the social peace will not be tolerated, the Communist Party of China said, “We must resolutely crack down on the infiltration and sabotage activities of hostile forces as well as illegal and criminal activities that disturb social order,”
The strict measures imposed as part of the country’s “zero COVID-19” strategy sparked protests in other cities, including Beijing.
