Thai police announced that 284 animals from 22 different species were found in a raid on the farm of the person who tried to smuggle a baby gorilla from Nigeria to Bangkok via Türkiye on December 22 in Nakhon Pathom province. Authorities, who said that the farm had the necessary license for animal trade, have launched an investigation into whether the trade of animals on the farm was legal.
Police also said that the documents of the cargo box containing the gorilla indicated that it contained 50 rabbits.
Atthaphon Charoenchansa, Director General of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Protection Department of Thailand, stated that the gorilla cub, the worth of which was determined to be multimillions in the smuggling market, was intended to be smuggled from Thailand to another country.
