The volcano in Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai Island erupted

An eruption occurred at the volcano in Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai Island located at 65 km north of the Tonga’s capital city of Nukuʻalofa. After eruption, volcano spewed ash and smoke into the sky. Tonga Geological Services (TGS) urged people stay indoors and wear face mask if they were outside. Public enterprises closed due to tsunami warning, while government employees instructed to turn back their homes. TGS told the volcano erupted in December 20 last year, but today’s eruption was about 7 times stronger than the last eruption and continues to grow. Also it was indicated that there is a risk of acid rain after the eruption. Tsunami waves reaching up to 30 centimeters were recorded after the eruption, according to the Tonga Meteorological Service.
