Thousands of immigrants land in southern Italy

A trawler carrying approximately 600 migrants rescued off the coast of Sicily landed in Catania, Italy. The Coast Guard’s ‘Nave Peluso’ accompanied the vessel after almost 200 people rescued at sea landed in Catania and Messina on two other Coast Guard vessels.

Additionally, due to the unprecedented increase in migrant crossings across the Mediterranean, the Italian government declared a state of emergency on the whole national territory on April 11.
