Post-election violence in India’s West Bengal state has claimed three lives and led to hundreds of arrests following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) historic victory over Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year government. Among the dead is an aide to prominent BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, prompting the party to accuse the outgoing Trinamool Congress (TMC) of carrying out targeted assassinations. The TMC has strongly denied the allegations, instead blaming BJP-backed provocateurs for the unrest, which has reportedly included the systematic vandalization of Muslim homes and places of worship. Despite her electoral defeat, Banerjee has refused to step down, accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the BJP. In an effort to restore order, authorities have launched a massive crackdown, opening over 200 criminal cases and taking more than 1,000 people into custody.
