Turkish-American Officer Makes NYPD History

Ali Hammutoğlu became the first Turkish-American to be promoted to lieutenant and appointed to a management post within New York’s subway police, marking a milestone for the Turkish community in the New York Police Department. Hammutoğlu, who moved to the United States in 1997 and joined the NYPD in 2005, said, “I started as a police officer and rose through the ranks by taking promotion exams.” He added that he later served in community affairs and internal investigations before becoming a lieutenant. Hammutoğlu also said he was proud of helping establish the NYPD Muslim Police Officers Association, noting that its goal is “to integrate with the public and build understanding across communities.”
