Turkish FM calls for de-escalation amid Russia-Ukraine dispute

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu answered questions ahead of the second day session of the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Latvia’s capital Riga. Cavusoglu said that Turkey supports enlargement of NATO, addressing Ukraine’s membership after a question regarding Ukraine’s membership to the alliance. Concerning the recent escalation between Ukraine and Russia, Cavusoglu stated that Turkey is in contact with both sides, “We recommend them to remain calm, and reduce the tension” he added. Turkish Minister have met Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kubela and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. President Erdogan plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin as well on Friday, Cavusoglu said.
