Turkish Kızık Rug Gains Cultural Protection

The traditional Turkish Kızık rug, crafted in Tokat’s Kızık village and rooted in Oghuz heritage, has received geographical indication registration, ensuring its preservation as a cultural legacy while providing economic opportunities for women.

Known for its unique motifs that reflect women’s emotions, history, and lifestyle, the rug’s protection was achieved through R&D studies and fieldwork by the Tokat Provincial Directorate of National Education and the Tokat Maturation Institute.

Serap Buzludere of the Maturation Institute stated, “The Kızık rug stands out with its distinctive patterns and weaving techniques. By securing geographical indication, we’ve safeguarded its cultural and historical significance while contributing to Tokat’s branding and economic value.”

The initiative ensures the survival of traditional craftsmanship under state protection and empowers local women economically.
