Turkish Women Firefighters in Izmir Blaze a Trail in the Fire Department

Women firefighters in Izmir’s Fire Department are making a significant impact, demonstrating remarkable skills and dedication. Working as drivers, responding to emergency calls, and fighting fires, these women are performing on par with their male counterparts, often outshining more experienced firefighters. The Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department now has 15 women firefighters among its 1,170-strong team.

Ayet Kütükbaş, one of Izmir’s few female fire truck drivers, expressed her pride in the profession, noting the challenges but highlighting the rewards of protecting all forms of life. She encouraged more women to join the fire service, stressing that no obstacle can deter women firefighters. Despite challenges such as narrow streets and occasional insensitivity from the public, the women continue to set an inspiring example.
