Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Türkiye is prepared to revive the Istanbul talks aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine War, stressing that “direct negotiations must continue” despite difficulties.
Speaking in Berlin after meeting German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, Fidan said European security discussions should include Türkiye, noting that NATO and EU mechanisms must work “constructively” until Türkiye’s EU membership process moves forward.
He criticized stalled EU accession chapters and said Türkiye would “quickly get back on track” once a real membership perspective is restored.
On the Russia-Ukraine War, Fidan said earlier Istanbul rounds had produced positive results and added, “This momentum must not be lost. Türkiye is ready to host talks again.”
Addressing counterterrorism, Fidan said the “Terror-Free Türkiye” process is progressing and urged Europe, Iraq, Syria, and Iran to jointly confront the PKK, noting Germany hosts around 14,000 PKK members. He emphasized that Syria’s territorial integrity and a system of equal citizenship are key to stability in the region.
