Türkiye’s Black Sea Fisherwomen Preserve 70-Year Tradition

In the Perşembe district of Ordu, Türkiye, women have been fishing alongside their husbands for over 70 years, continuing a tradition that helps sustain the local economy. The fisherwomen, around 25 in number, set out at night in fishing boats to catch bonito and whiting, casting nets and hauling in fish.

This practice began in the 1950s when men, unable to find crew members, called on their wives for help. Since then, the women have worked with their husbands, both contributing to their households and keeping the profession alive through generations.

One of the fisherwomen, Havagül Arslan, shared her experience: “I’ve been doing this for 20 years. My husband and I go to sea in the evening and return in the morning. Though fishing is tough, we work hard for our daily bread.” Despite its challenges, Arslan emphasized the satisfaction of supporting her family through this work.
