Türkiye’s Historic Sinkhole Falls Victim to Drought

Çıralı Obruğu, a historic sinkhole located in the Karapınar district of Konya, Türkiye has lost its former allure due to recurrent seasonal droughts in recent years. This site, once full of groundwater and housing man-made caves, attracted both local and foreign tourists with its deep blue waters and unique visual appeal. However, due to environmental issues like groundwater depletion, insufficient rainfall, and global climate change, the sinkhole has dried up completely. Visitors are now saddened by its barren state, which contrasts sharply with its past vibrancy. A visitor, Erhan Uysal, voiced his hope for the drought to end and for the sinkhole to reclaim its former splendor.
