Two consecutive earthquakes, measuring 5.1 and 3.7 in magnitude, struck Peru’s mountainous Junin region on Saturday evening, leaving six people dead and 21 injured. The seismic shocks hit the Chupaca province roughly 300 kilometers east of Lima, completely destroying 48 adobe homes and damaging 18 others. Luis Vasquez, head of the National Civil Defense Institute, stated that emergency tents have been set up for the approximately 300 residents affected by the disaster. Fire and rescue crews remain active in the hardest-hit zones as they continue searching the rubble for trapped survivors.
