Typhoon Rai: 393 killed, 64 gone missing in Philippines

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Philippines (NDRRMC) has announced that the death toll rose to 389, the search continues for 64 people who disappeared and the treatment of 1,146 injured people continues. The damage caused by the typhoon to agriculture and infrastructure reached 22 billion pesos (approximately $ 440 million), and more than 500,000 households were destroyed, officials reported.

Philippine Under-Secretary of Health Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that 141 healthcare facilities and 62 Covid-19 testing labs were damaged, including hospitals in typhoon-affected areas. Thousands of doses of Covid-19 vaccines were spoiled due to power outages, Vergerie added. Typhoon Rai is the 15th and most powerful typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, according to the National Weather Service.
