The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) announced that Ukraine’s population has decreased by 10 million since Russia’s invasion began in 2022. Florence Bauer, UNFPA’s Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, highlighted that the war has worsened Ukraine’s already declining demographic situation. Factors such as mass emigration, reduced fertility rates, and war-related deaths have contributed to this sharp decline. Bauer noted that Ukraine’s birth rate is now one of the lowest globally, at around one child per woman, far below the 2.1 required for population stability.
