A special event at the UN General Assembly marked “March 30 International Day of Zero Waste,” focusing on reducing waste in the fashion and textile industry. Organized by the Permanent Representation of Türkiye to the UN, the Zero Waste Foundation, UNEP, and UN-Habitat, the event featured high-level officials and a visual projection highlighting the industry’s waste crisis.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that without urgent action, global waste will reach 3.8 billion tons by 2050. He called for a shift to circular fashion, which could save $700 billion by 2030. UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang emphasized the fashion industry’s role in pollution and urged businesses to adopt sustainable practices.
The event also included a panel discussing innovative solutions, with participation from industry leaders and international representatives. The initiative aims to drive global action toward sustainability and waste reduction.
