Tensions flared at the UN Security Council following US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, prompting global calls for an immediate ceasefire and renewed diplomacy to avoid a wider conflict.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned of a “spiral of revenge” and urged protection of civilians and the resumption of IAEA inspections. The US defended the strikes as “self-defense” and a move to block Iran’s nuclear capacity, with Ambassador Dorothy Shea warning that any Iranian retaliation would be met with a “devastating response.”
Iran condemned the attacks, blaming Israeli influence over Washington and invoking its right to self-defense. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi confirmed severe damage at multiple sites and warned that Iran’s stockpile of 60%-enriched uranium—around 400 kg—is now unmonitored.
Russia, China, and Pakistan submitted a draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire and return to diplomacy. Russia called the strikes a “violation of international law,” while China warned of a looming nuclear disaster.
European powers called for renewed negotiations and IAEA access, while Israel praised the US strikes as necessary to “stop a nuclear Iran.” Middle Eastern nations and others, including Pakistan and Algeria, condemned the attacks as threats to regional and global security.
