US baby boy becomes world’s most premature baby

Curtis Means, a 21-week-old baby boy born in Birmingham, Alabama, USA on July 5, 2020, has entered the Guinness Book of Records. The baby is now 16 months old, and has been dubbed “the world’s most premature baby to survive”. Curtis weighed only 420 grams when he was born 19 weeks prematurely. Curtis baby was discharged on April 6 after 275 days in the hospital after being taken off the ventilator three months later. He had only a 1% chance of survival.

“The numbers showed that babies born very prematurely had little or no chance of survival,” said Professor at the University of Alabama Hospital (UAB) Dr. Brian Sims. His mother Anne Butler said, “Being able to take Curtis home and surprise my other children with their younger brother is a moment I will always remember. I am grateful for the UAB team and their support. They took the time to educate me on this and taught me what happened every step of the way,”
