US observes first anniversary of capitol insurrection

The United States Capitol is preparing to observe the first anniversary of the 06 January 2021 insurgency, after insurgents attacked the Capitol in an attempt to prevent Joe Biden’s certification as President of the United States.

The congress raid, where 5 people were killed, organized by supporters of former President Donald Trump in the USA was recorded as an attack on US democracy. The investigation into the incident went down in history as one of the FBI’s largest and most complex investigations. At least 725 people have been charged with connection to the incident, according to US Department of Justice data. About 165 of them pleaded guilty, while at least 70 of them were sentenced to prison.

According to a survey by research firm NPR/Ipsos, 64 percent of US citizens said that American democracy is in crisis and at risk. According to the research, 32 percent of Americans believe that the congressional crackdown is a coup attempt or an uprising, while 28 percent think that the events are an uncontrollable turmoil. 17 percent of the Americans stated that the incidents could be a conspiracy and stated that they were carried out by opponents of Donald Trump, including the Antifa organization and government agents.
