Venezuelan opposition leader Machado returns to country after nearly a year

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has returned home. After approximately one year in exile, Machado announced her return to Venezuela via a post on her social media account, stating, “I am here. I am with you.” She did not provide further details regarding her current location or how she managed to return to the country.

Signal of a return from Edmundo Gonzalez

Edmundo Gonzalez, another Venezuelan opposition leader currently living in exile in Spain, confirmed Machado’s return and indicated that he, too, would join her soon.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he was unaware of Machado’s return to Venezuela and implied that the U.S. would continue to support Delcy Rodriguez—whom he referred to as the interim president of Venezuela. Describing Machado as a “very nice woman,” Trump added, “But things are going really well for us in Venezuela.”
