In Venezuela, where the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) has been in power for 25 years, 21 million registered voters began heading to polling stations at 06:00 local time to elect a president.
The results of the election, which will end at 18:00 local time, are expected to be announced tomorrow morning.
Although there are 10 candidates running in the election, the vast majority of the votes is expected to be shared by the incumbent President Nicolas Maduro and Edmundo Gonzalez, the candidate of the opposition coalition’s United Democratic Platform (PUD).
