Volkan Demirel’s High Hopes for Türkiye in EURO 2024

As the 2024 European Football Championship (EURO 2024) approaches, Turkish coach Volkan Demirel expressed his optimism for the national team’s performance. Speaking to the press, Demirel, who is also Türkiye’s football ambassador for EURO 2032, highlighted the team’s potential and his expectations.

Demirel, reflecting on his experience in the 2008 European Championship, emphasized the growth and maturity of the current Turkish squad. “We have a team with more international experience, younger yet mature on the field,” he said, praising coach Vincenzo Montella. Demirel hopes for the team to reach at least the quarter or semi-finals, stressing the importance of unity and national pride in achieving success.

Demirel believes the team’s sense of belonging and quality can lead them to victory. “If we fight with this sense of belonging, we can touch the cup with one hand,” he stated, underscoring the significance of daily performances in short championships.

Demirel also spoke about his tenure at Hatayspor, expressing pride in the team’s efforts despite challenges. “They tried to do everything they could despite all difficulties,” he noted, announcing his intention to take a break and return refreshed.

Commenting on Fenerbahçe’s new coach, Jose Mourinho, Demirel acknowledged the excitement around the appointment. “Mourinho is a big name. People are happy for his arrival because everyone expects success,” he remarked, hopeful for a positive outcome in the upcoming season.
