Prof. Dr. Faruk Alaeddinoğlu, a lecturer in the Faculty of Letters Department of Geography at Van YYU, commented on the waterspouts recently observed in Türkiye’s Lake Van. Stating that it is a rare situation for three waterspouts to appear at the same time and on a lake, Alaeddinoğlu said that this unusual situation is caused by climate change.
“The fact that all three appeared at the same time is truly a rare situation. However, climate change causes such natural events to occur on small lakes as well. We will probably see these tornadoes more frequently from now on. Maybe it will not carry very large water masses, like in the Mediterranean waters, and cause serious damage when it reaches land, but we can think that it will cause minor damage, especially to the coastal region, said Alaeddinoğlu.
