Yoshishugu Nagata, the official responsible for elderly policies in the city of Ashiya, Japan, announced that the world’s oldest person, 116-year-old Tomiko Itooka, died at a nursing home in Ashiya on December 29.
Tomiko Itooka, who was born in Osaka on May 23, 1908, during the reign of Emperor Meiji, became the “world’s oldest person” following the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas last year.
The title of “world’s oldest person” was passed to 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born 16 days after Itooka.
