8 Injured in Georgia During Protests Against Controversial Bill

In the protests, which started on April 15 and became increasingly violent, against the “Transparency of Foreign Influence” bill on the grounds that it would restrict freedom of expression and suppress non-governmental organizations in Georgia, demonstrators attempted to break into the parliament building in Tbilisi. Following the police’s intervention with tear gas, stun grenades, and pressurized water, 8 demonstrators were injured, and 2 people cursing at the police were detained.

The bill was approved in the second reading in the Georgian parliament with 83 votes against 23, and if it gets approved in all three readings, it will be sent to the president for approval to become law.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili announced that she would veto the bill.
