Berlin Commemorates Hanau Attack Victims

In Berlin, nine individuals of immigrant origin, including four Turkish citizens, who lost their lives in a racist attack in Hanau, Germany, four years ago, were remembered in a commemoration event. Following the solemn program, a protest march condemning the attack unfolded in the capital. The mostly young crowd displayed banners denouncing the Hanau massacre, lit candles, and placed flowers in front of photos of the victims. Despite rain, thousands participated in the march, leading to occasional clashes between demonstrators and police, resulting in the detention of some protesters. Prime Minister Olaf Scholz marked the occasion with a social media message, condemning far-right extremism and expressing the commitment to protect democracy.
