Berlin Commemorates Hanau Attack Victims

In Berlin, nine individuals of immigrant origin, including four Turkish citizens, who lost their lives in a racist attack in Hanau, Germany, four years ago, were remembered in a commemoration event. Following the solemn program, a protest march condemning the attack unfolded in the capital. The mostly young crowd displayed banners denouncing the Hanau massacre, lit candles, and placed flowers in front of photos of the victims. Despite rain, thousands participated in the march, leading to occasional clashes between demonstrators and police, resulting in the detention of some protesters. Prime Minister Olaf Scholz marked the occasion with a social media message, condemning far-right extremism and expressing the commitment to protect democracy.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said they are “moving towards a good decision” on granting an export license for Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Türkiye, though no final decision has been made yet.

Merz met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London. At their joint press conference, Starmer said the UK-Germany relationship is entering a “new era,” addressing key issues such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “We’re working for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, along with careful humanitarian aid,” he said.

On Ukraine, Starmer emphasized the need to bring Putin to the table for an “unconditional ceasefire,” while Merz highlighted U.S. willingness to provide weapons financed by Europe. He added, “Germany wants to contribute significantly.”

Merz also noted that defense ministers are discussing air defense and other military aid for Ukraine.
