Danes Vote in Tight Parliamentary Election

Voting is underway across Denmark as over 4.3 million eligible voters head to the polls to elect 179 members of the national parliament. Polling stations will remain open until 8:00 p.m. local time, with initial unofficial results expected overnight. While 12 parties are competing, no single party is expected to secure the 90 seats required for an outright majority, though recent polls indicate the left-leaning bloc holds a slight advantage over the right.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of the center-left Social Democrats is seeking a third term, facing strong competition from Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen of the center-right Liberal Party. Both figures currently serve together in a three-party coalition government formed after the November 2022 elections. Given Denmark’s highly fractured political landscape, the final election results are widely expected to lead to another power-sharing coalition to govern the Scandinavian nation
