Thousands of visitors from across the globe gathered in Bosnia and Herzegovina to celebrate the 516th Ayvaz Dede Festival, one of the country’s oldest and most vibrant traditions. The two-week celebration culminated on Sunday in the town of Prusac, featuring traditional convoys of horsemen, Quran recitations, and a performance by Türkiye’s historic Mehter military band. Deeply rooted in Bosnian Muslim identity, the event honors the legend of a 15th-century dervish whose 40 days of prayer allegedly split a giant rock to bring water to a drought-stricken region. Highlighting its massive cultural and spiritual significance, the local press has described the enduring event as “the largest prayer gathering of Muslims in Europe.”
