Philippine and Chinese Coast Guard Ships Collide in South China Sea

Tensions escalated in the South China Sea as a Philippine coast guard ship collided with its Chinese counterpart in the disputed Ayungin Shoal region. The incident occurred during the Philippine coast guard’s supply operation, with accusations from the Philippines that the Chinese ship engaged in perilous maneuvers. Four Filipinos sustained injuries in the collision, and damage was inflicted upon the Philippine vessel, BRP Sindangan. The Philippine Coast Guard Spokesperson, Jay Tarriela, accused China of “illegal actions,” marking a renewed spike in tensions between the two nations.
