Seoul Court Lengthens Ex-President Yoon’s Prison Term

A Seoul appeals court has increased the prison sentence of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol from five to seven years over his failed attempt to impose martial law. The Seoul High Court ruled in favor of special prosecutors, convicting the ousted leader of multiple offenses that included actively obstructing his own arrest following his impeachment. The judges overturned a previous lower court ruling, holding Yoon fully accountable for illegally bypassing a mandatory Cabinet meeting before attempting to decree military rule. This extended penalty for obstruction of justice adds to the severe legal fallout Yoon is already facing, which includes a separate life sentence for rebellion.
