Math Teacher Wins Netflix Copyright Lawsuit

A Turkish mathematics teacher has won a landmark copyright infringement lawsuit against the global streaming giant Netflix over the unauthorized use of his educational content. The court ordered the platform to pay 1.95 million Turkish Lira ($42,000) in damages—a sum expected to surpass 4 million Lira with accumulated interest—after it clipped one of Mustafa Güler’s online lectures for a TV series promo. Alerted to the violation by a student, Güler emphasized the importance of the verdict for digital creators, stating, “Netflix or any other company cannot take a content creator’s work and use it in advertising; our goal wasn’t the money, but the principle.” His legal team hopes this decisive legal victory will set a powerful precedent for independent artists and educators fighting to protect their intellectual property worldwide.
