Forest Fires Ravage Greek Islands, Thousands Evacuated

Greece is battling forest fires on the Aegean islands of Kos, Crete, and Chios, resulting in the evacuation of thousands and injuries to five firefighters. The blaze on Kos Island began in Antimachia village, spreading towards the tourist hotspot Kardamaina. Around 10,000 people, including tourists, were evacuated to schools, sports facilities, and hotels. Firefighters, bolstered by reinforcements from Athens and Rhodes, have managed to control part of the fire and protect residential areas.

On Chios Island, the fire in Sidirounda village has been contained to forest areas, preventing further spread. Five firefighters sustained minor injuries during the efforts. Authorities have identified the person responsible for the fire, a 63-year-old who accidentally ignited it. He faces a €9,000 fine and arson charges.
