Hundreds of truck drivers waiting to cross into Bulgaria at the Hamzabeyli Border Gate in Edirne have formed a 17-kilometer queue in freezing temperatures. Drivers blame the congestion on system updates and slow customs processing on the Bulgarian side.
Lacking basic facilities, drivers are calling on authorities to address the issue. “We can’t eat, shower, or rest properly,” said trucker Rahmi Kağan, who was transporting goods to Germany. Doğan Gündoğdu highlighted security concerns, citing thefts and fuel robberies. “We have no security; we take turns staying awake to guard our trucks,” he said.
Another driver, İsmail Sarıkaya, urged the creation of proper rest areas. “We are exhausted. We haven’t slept since last night,” he stated. Drivers are demanding a more efficient system to reduce wait times and improve working conditions.
