17th century ottoman sultans portraits sold for record number at auction in england

Six oil paintings of Ottoman Sultans Suleiman the Magnificent, Yıldırım Bayezid, Bayezid II, Murad II, Mehmed I and Timur, the founder of the Timurid Empire, sold at auction by Sotheby’s, one of the biggest auction houses in England, for 1,346,000 pounds.

The 17th-century paintings, consisting of 6 portraits made with oil on canvas, became the highest-selling work at the auction house. According to the information provided by the auction house, it is stated that the portraits are based on the works of the 16th century Italian Renaissance historian and biographer Paolo Giovio in the “Giovio” series, which consists of the image of rulers, statesmen and other important figures.
