Gafure Yücel Kurt, 63, living in Malatya’s Battalgazi district in Türkiye, is illiterate and recently lost her husband. She became a mother at the age of 56 after struggling for many years to have a child. Kurt, who did not receive an education because her father did not send her to school, has now begun a literacy course to help her daughter Özge’s education.
Kurt attends the course with her daughter Özge, who will start school next year. Kurt said that she clings to life with the joy of having a child years later. “My father did not send me to school. I felt bad about my illiteracy and began taking classes. I wanted to be self-sufficient, and I was successful.”
