A severe storm wreaked havoc in eight regions in central Russia. In the Mari El region, north of the Volga River, eight people, including three children, lost their lives when a tree fell at a campsite hosting hundreds of people. A total of 76 people were injured nationwide, and 50 buildings were damaged. Approximately 100 thousand households also lost power. Authorities have warned locals to steer clear of trees, damaged buildings, and swimming areas.

Seven prisons across France were targeted in overnight attacks, with vehicles set ablaze and a prison gate hit by automatic gunfire. Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said the attacks aimed to intimidate inmates and disrupt the government’s anti-drug efforts. No group has claimed responsibility. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau vowed a “ruthless” response, while prison unions called the incidents “extremely serious” and demanded urgent action. Facilities in Toulon, Marseille, Nîmes, and near Paris were among those attacked.
