Smoke and lava continue rising to the sky from the volcanic eruption in El Paso, La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. A red alert was issued in La Palma due to the advancement of the lava. Regional authorities started to make mandatory evacuation of around 5,000 locals with mobility issues hours before the eruption took place. Officials warned local residents not to approach the lava in any way. They asked residents to stay at home, and minimize the use of cell phones in case of volcanic ash.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported that the eruption began at 09:45 local time, forming a 700-meter-long crack in the ground.
Authorities had closed off the area before the eruption. The volcano, which last erupted in December 2023, has been intermittently active since 2021.
