Ecuador’s presidential candidate, Fernando Villavicencio, was fatally shot after an event in Quito. The attack also left one assailant dead and nine injured. In the wake of the incident, President Guillermo Lasso pointed to organized crime gangs as perpetrators and declared three days of national mourning. Villavicencio had recently disclosed threats from a drug-related gang leader. The election is scheduled for August 20.
