Protests erupted in 43 French cities, spearheaded by 400 NGOs, calling for the repeal of a controversial immigration law. The demonstrations, notably concentrated in Paris, centered around Republique Square, where impassioned protesters demanded the complete withdrawal of the policy.
The legislation dictates that foreign individuals with employment can access family benefits 30 months after arrival, while those without jobs must wait for five years. The law makes it challenging for immigrants to bring family members to France, and children born to foreign families in the country cannot automatically obtain citizenship but must apply between the ages of 16 and 18. Furthermore, the law allows for the revocation of French citizenship for dual citizens convicted of crimes. The contentious measure received approval in the National Assembly on December 20, 2023, with 349 “yes” votes to 186 “no” votes after passing through the Senate. The Constitutional Council is set to assess the procedural compliance of the text on January 25.
